Medical Physics is an interdisciplinary field that integrates the principles of physics with medicine to improve the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease. With rapid advancements in healthcare technology, medical physics has become a cornerstone of modern medicine, enabling clinicians to visualize internal anatomy, detect diseases at an early stage, and deliver precise therapeutic interventions while ensuring patient safety.
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the physical principles underlying contemporary medical imaging technologies, including X-ray imaging, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and Ultrasound. Students will explore the generation and interaction of radiation and sound waves with biological tissues, image formation mechanisms, and the engineering concepts that govern the operation of modern diagnostic equipment. The course also introduces the fundamentals of radiation safety, quality assurance, and the role of medical physicists in healthcare.
Special emphasis is placed on connecting fundamental concepts of classical and modern physics including electromagnetic radiation, wave propagation, atomic and nuclear physics, and magnetism with their practical applications in medical diagnostics. Learners will gain an appreciation of how advances in digital imaging, artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted diagnostics, image processing, precision medicine, and emerging healthcare technologies are transforming medical practice and improving patient outcomes.
Designed with an interdisciplinary perspective, this course bridges theory and practice through concept-oriented learning and clinically relevant examples. Mathematical treatment is kept at an accessible level, allowing students from diverse academic backgrounds to develop a clear understanding of the underlying physics without requiring extensive prior knowledge of advanced mathematics.
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to explain the physical principles behind major medical imaging modalities, understand the functioning of modern diagnostic equipment, evaluate factors influencing image quality and patient safety, and appreciate the growing role of physics in technology-driven healthcare. The knowledge gained will provide a strong foundation for advanced studies in medical physics, biomedical engineering, radiological sciences, and related disciplines, while fostering scientific rigor, ethical responsibility, and a commitment to safe and effective clinical practice.
